JAKARTA, March 30 (Xinhua) — Indonesian prosecutors on Thursday demanded a death sentence for police general Teddy Minahasa over an alleged drug-smuggling case that has shocked the archipelagic country and tarnished the police reputation.
The 52-year-old general was named a suspect in October last year before he was supposedly sworn in as the new police chief for East Java province. The Jakarta Police arrested him on suspicion of trafficking 5 kg of crystal meth to the northern part of the capital.
Investigators found that the methamphetamine was confiscated as evidence by the Bukittinggi City Police in West Sumatra province, where Minahasa was still serving as the police chief in the province.
In a televised trial, state prosecutors accused Minahasa of stealing the drugs from the evidence locker together with several accomplices and replacing it with alum.
“The defendant has enjoyed the profits from the sales of methamphetamines,” a prosecutor said at the West Jakarta District Court, adding that Minahasa had not pleaded guilty to the charge.
