IPL 2024 Playoffs: Is it game over for Hardik Pandya’s MI?

IPL 2024 Playoffs: Is it game over for Hardik Pandya’s MI?

Mumbai Indians lost their 8th game of the season with a 24-run thumping at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday. With just 3 games left in the league stages for the Hardik Pandya led side, the key question now arises whether Mumbai Indians still stand a chance to get to the play off stages of the IPL.

Road ahead for the Mumbai Indians:

Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians will have the opportunity to prove their mettle in 3 more matches against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants. Mumbai Indians who are coming after 4 consecutive losses will now have to win all their next 3 matches in order to stand a chance for qualifying matches.

Can MI still qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs?

Well, the short answer is yes. Mathematically, Mumbai Indians still have a chance of qualifying for the 2024 Playoffs if they win all their remaining three matches, which will take them to 12 points. However, in reality, it seems highly unlikely that MI will make it to the playoff stages this year.

Looking at the IPL 2024 Points Table, one would see that MI cannot threaten Rajasthan Royals or Kolkata Knight Riders’ place at the table, given that they are already at 16 and 14 points, respectively. Meanwhile, the possiblity of Mumbai to qualify for the playoffs would entail that Sunrisers Hyderabad (12 points) and Lucknow Super Giants (12 points) lose all of their remaining 4 matches while no other team crosses the threshold of 12 points. Even if this scenario plays out, MI will have to edge out their competition in terms of net run rate in order to secure a playoff berth.
