With less than a week left for the announcement of Indian cricket team for World Cup 2024, Irfan Pathan has named Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal as his ‘top three picks’ for team India. Amid speculations of entry of star IPL players like Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav in the team, Irfan Pathan chose to name the three based on their performance in T20I and other tournaments.
“Now that World Cup is nearing. My top 3 for team India. 1) Rohit Sharma (in form as well as captain). Yashasvi Jaiswal (been saying that he should be there even before his 100 purely cos he was performing well for team India before the ipl). Virat Kohli. (Shouldn’t be any question regarding his place or strike rate. His strike rate at the T20I is 138 + Better than Chris Gayle+ 51 avg. N his ipl strike rate this season is 150),” he wrote on X.
As Rohit Sharma is set to handle the captaincy of team India, he appeared to be an obvious choice of Pathan. Whereas, Yashasvi Jaiswal has continued to maintain a consistent performance throughout the IPL league. Hence, he is likely to get an opening spot in the team.
Jaiswal’s performance in the IPL 2024 has reduced Gill’s chances to be named in the IPL 2024 team. While commenting on Gill, Pathan maintained that hte youngster might be selected as a back-up opener, in case something goes wrong with Jaiswal.
While supporting his take on Virat Kohli, Pathan mentioned his impressive strike rate at the T20I, which was better than Chris Gayle. Moreover, his IPL strike rate this season has stood at 150. Pathan’s insight has cleared a misconception that Virat Kohli has presented an apparantly low strike-rate. Virat Kohli also holds the title of Orange cap holder of IPL 2024 with 379 runs.
