Omaha political influence: Billionaire Warren Buffet’s support could decide US Presidential election results – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The upcoming US presidential election could potentially be decided by the city of Omaha, Nebraska, situated in the Midwestern prairie and is home to billionaire investor Warren Buffett, according to a Bloomberg report.
This prospect has raised hopes among some Democrats that Buffett, who was once a prolific political donor, will re-enter the political arena to help President Joe Biden secure re-election.
In the past, Buffett actively supported Democratic candidates, including Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race. He appeared on stage with her at a rally, criticized her opponent Donald Trump, and consistently donated to moderate Democrats in US Senate races across the country.
However, in recent years, Buffett has refrained from making political contributions to federal candidates, possibly to shield his companies and employees from potential backlash. This decision has become more noticeable as Omaha has gained significance in the upcoming presidential race. In 2022, he had said that he “learned that you can make a whole lot more people sustainably mad than you can make temporarily happy by speaking out on any subject.”
Omaha, which is hosting Berkshire Hathaway‘s annual shareholders meeting this weekend, is located in a congressional district that was won by Biden in 2020 and Trump in 2016. The area’s single Electoral College vote could potentially secure another term for Biden if he wins three northern battleground states but fails to win any of the southern swing states. While many Democrats believe Biden is well-positioned to win in “Joemaha,” others see shortcomings in the party’s strategy.
Preston Love Jr, the Nebraska Democrat challenging Republican Senator Pete Ricketts in November, claimed that the Buffett family turned down his requests for financial support, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee rejected his appeal for funds.
Love expressed concern that without adequate investment in the state and his own campaign, Black voter turnout may decrease. Given the high concentration of Black voters in the battleground district, a decline in their participation could cost Biden the win and jeopardize Democrats’ chances of flipping Omaha’s House seat. This possibility could alarm Omaha’s wealthiest resident, who has long supported Democratic priorities such as higher taxes on the wealthy.
Hoping for Buffet’s support, state democratic party chair Jane Kleeb said, “Anytime that the Buffetts get engaged, it signals to other donors that it’s more important to give. So obviously I do hope they get more involved in this cycle in a visible way, because Buffett brings all the good luck.”
