Tropical storm Idalia heads to Florida, expected to become a hurricane – Times of India

On Sunday, Tropical Storm Idalia formed in the Caribbean, lashing southeastern Mexico with gusts and precipitation, while meteorologists anticipate its transformation into a hurricane before reaching Florida later in the week.
Despite projections indicating that the storm will bypass Mexican landfall, the US National Hurricane Center stated that Idalia will traverse the Gulf of Mexico and approach northwestern Florida.
The NHC cautioned that Idalia will escalate the “threat of life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds along certain sections of Florida’s west coast and the Florida Panhandle, potentially as early as Tuesday.”
According to the USA Today, Ryan Truchelut, the head meteorologist at WeatherTiger, a Florida-based meteorological organization, has pointed out indicators suggesting that Idalia might attain the level of a major hurricane with sustained winds reaching a minimum of 111 mph, classifying it as a Category 3 storm.
“I don’t want to pull the fire alarm, but Idalia has infernal potential, and you need to react now while you still have time,” Truchelut told the USA Today. “Stay safe, Florida, and keep watching the skies.”
According to the NHC, the intensity forecasts exhibit significant variability, ranging from a minor to a major hurricane status before the storm’s arrival on the northeast Gulf coast.
Parts of Florida’s coastline have been issued storm surge and hurricane watches, and isolated instances of flash flooding are anticipated, the NHC cautioned.
In preparation for the storm’s approach, governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency across 33 counties. “If you are in the path of this storm, you should expect power outages, so please prepare for that,” DeSantis said during a briefing on Sunday.
According to the White House, President Joe Biden had been briefed about Idalia’s forecast path and will be kept up to date as the storm moves.
In Mexico’s Quintana Roo state, where popular coastal destinations like Cancun are situated, Idalia unleashed rain, casting a pall over one of the final weekends of summer vacations.
Substantial precipitation is predicted across portions of eastern Yucatan in Mexico and western Cuba.
Just a week ago, Hurricane Hilary, which had briefly ascended to Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, struck Mexico’s Baja California state on the Pacific coast, weakening to a tropical storm. The event led to one fatality and infrastructure damage.
Mexico contends with hurricanes annually on both its Pacific and Atlantic coasts.
Scientists have issued warnings that the intensification of storms is linked to the global rise in temperatures attributed to climate change.
