Virender Sehwag flags risk of ‘constant changes’ in CSK: ‘Failing to make…’

The constant changes in the playing strategy of Chennai Super Kings including changes in the playing XI may land the Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s franchise in trouble, said former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag. He also said that every time CSK try something similar, ‘they fail to make the playoffs’.

While speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag admitted that the team are not playing badly under Gaikwad’s leadership, but said that the constant changes in the team are not a ‘good sign for CSK’ in the ongoing IPL 2024.

Expressing surprise at Chennai Super Kings’ constant changes in order, Virender Sehwag said “They aren’t playing bad, but this is the first time I have seen Chennai making constant changes.”

Highlighting the changed order of CSK batting, Virender Sehwag pointed out the constantly changing order of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane. “These are not good signs for CSK. Every time they have done that, they failed to make the playoffs. It’s not that Rachin batted so far, couple of his innings were good. Usually, CSK sticks with the players. But first, they benched Daryl Mitchell, and now Rachin, it could be someone else in the next game. These are not good changes. And these are not tactical changes. I feel CSK look in a bit of haste in making these changes in the last few matches,” he told Cricbuuzz.

Sehwag’s fear for the team turned out to be true after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost the IPL 2024 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets on Tuesday. CSK lost the match despite the strong performance of Gaikwad and Shivam Dube.

Gaikwad (108, 60b, 12×4, 3×6) and Shivam Dube (66, 27b, 3×4, 7×6) added 104 runs for the fourth-wicket stand to power the Super Kings to a competitive 210 for four.

Thus, LSG also scored a rare back-to-back home and away win over Chennai as they had won the match at Ekana Stadium a few days back.

Gaikwad managed to make a half-century without any fours. Despite this, he managed to maintain a strike rate of above 180 during that phase. The fifty came off just 28 balls. The most spectacular shot that Gaikwad played on the night was a slice-cut off pacer Mohsin Khan that beat the point fielder for a boundary. In the end, Ruturaj Gaikwad made 108 for the team.
